It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
