It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
