It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
