It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
