It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
