It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
