It may look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
