It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
