It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
