It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
