It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
