It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
