It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
