It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
