It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
