It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
