It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
