It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
