It may look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
