It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
