It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
