It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
