It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
