It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
