It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
