It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
