It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
