It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
