It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
