It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
