It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
