It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
