It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
