It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
