It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
