It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
