It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
