It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
