It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
