It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
