It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
