It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
