It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
