It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
