It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
