It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
