It may look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
