It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
