It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
