It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
